Teens and college students can easily feel anxious trying to juggle school, work, friends, and family while trying to figure out the rest of their life.

According to the ADAA and the APA

  • 20% of college students say they feel stressed “most of the time.”

  • 80% of college students say they sometimes or often feel stressed.

  • 34% of college students report feeling depressed at least at one point within the last 90 days.

  • About half of surveyed college students felt overwhelmed with anxiety at least once within the last 12 months.

For many of us, the Holiday Season means family, friends, caroling, gathering, feasting, and parities, shopping and gifts. And for many of us the Holiday Season also means stress, anxiety, and fears.

We could talk about the ways and reasons that we get stressed out preparing to impress family and friends with a holiday feast, and we could discuss the emotional traumas that resurface when we think about facing family that we might otherwise avoid, and we could even talk about whether it is the winter driving or that we have to fly across the country that sends us into a panic attack.

No one is afraid of cruising comfortably and safely down the road. Instead, people tend to be afraid of getting into an accident, having a panic attack, getting trapped in their car, driving in bad weather, falling off bridges, having a sudden medical emergency behind the wheel, and anything else that could happen while driving.

It happens to almost all of us. Summer is here. We finally get some time off. We’re going to relax and restore ourselves. But somehow, it doesn’t seem to happen.

What is wrong here? Why can’t we relax?

I saw a client recently with a very common issue. They came to me because they couldn’t put their finger on what was wrong, but they knew they wanted to change the way they felt. Here’s what they told me.

I don’t know how to relax and stop worrying. I have a good life. I have a great job, a loving relationship, brilliant and beautiful kids, and I am usually very happy. Ev...

The Power of Fear

The power that we give to Fear never ceases to amaze me. We allow it to control our actions and reactions, and even to affect our entire lives. I was listening to the radio when it occurred to me that fear is just an idea that we made-up. Fear is just a concept. I was in my car, listening to an interview when, in response to a question about starting a new venture, the man said “I figured, if it wasn’t going to kill me or cause permanent bodily harm, what was there to lose really? So, we gave it a shot.”

That was a life-changing moment for me. If it wasn’t going to kill me or cause permanent bodily damage, why not give it a shot? In that moment, I understood that Fear was just a concept - a relative state...
