Frequently Asked Questions

What is Hypnosis?

Hypnosis is a natural state that you already experience every day. The most common example is daydreaming. Hypnosis is, in part, a process of creating a waking state of increased theta brain waves (the same as in deep sleep), where the subconscious mind is more susceptible to suggestion and change.

Is hypnosis safe?

Yes, it’s very safe and remember, it’s a natural state that we all experience on a daily basis. The biggest danger of hypnosis is listening to hypnosis audio products while driving or operating a vehicle or heavy machinery. Hypnosis is safe when practiced by an experienced, professional hypnotist.

Can anyone be hypnotized?

Yes. There is no force that can prevent someone from being hypnotized other than themselves. So if you are willing to participate and experience the process, you will go into hypnosis.

What does it feel like?

There’s nothing really magical about the feeling of a trance state, it’s something we’re used to. You may experience warmth, a relaxed heaviness, lightness, tingling sensations, and a peaceful physical stillness. After a hypnosis session, clients will often say that they feel like they’ve just slept for eight hours.

Will I lose control?

No. Hypnosis is about working together to empower the client to create changes in their life. Nobody can be hypnotized against their will. Nobody can be forced to do anything against their will, and if they’re given a suggestion they don’t like, they won’t take that suggestion.

Is hypnosis sleep?

No. While someone in trance looks like they’re asleep, they are actually in a heightened state of awareness. Their mind is always active and alert. Hypnosis is more of a laser-like focus of your attention. You will be able to hear everything around you, and you will remember as much as you would from any other conversation.

What benefits can hypnosis offer?

Hypnosis is a powerful and effective tool that can be used to change habits, fears, behaviors, emotional states, and limiting beliefs. You can create any change that you want to make.

How does Hypnosis work?

Hypnosis bypasses the conscious mind and talks directly to the subconscious mind, the part of the brain that’s in charge of emotions and imagination, habits and fears. The hypnotist introduces new information and suggestions to a person’s subconscious mind to help them to make changes.

I have a friend who tried hypnosis, and they said it didn't work - what happened?

It is difficult to know. Group sessions are not as effective for people who have difficulty relaxing in a room full of strangers, and this distracts them from the hypnotic work. Some people need coaching and practice to learn to allow themselves to go into trance, and it may have been that your friend was resisting the hypnotists instructions. A skilled and trained professional hypnotist will be able to coach a client to reach their success..

Can hypnosis be used with children?

Yes. Children are very skilled in using their imagination, and this talent can be adapted to help them develop skills in self hypnosis. Children naturally go in and out of hypnotic states as they become absorbed in pretend games, reading a story, playing a video game, or listening to music. The ability to use self hypnosis gives the child a sense of participation in treatment and enhances their independence and self-control.

My husband says that I’m too 'strong willed and intelligent' to be hypnotized. What would you say to that?

It has been my experience that the clients who say "I can't be hypnotized! I'm too _____!" are the ones that go into hypnosis the fastest and deepest - and have the best results. As for being "too intelligent" to be hypnotized, well - I will tell you confidently that there is no such thing!
